Empowering India's Agriculture through Seed Science Innovation

It is my privilege to welcome you to the ICAR–National Institute of Seed Science & Technology (ICAR-NISST), Mau, a premier institution committed to advancing seed science for the growth and sustainability of Indian agriculture. Seeds form the cornerstone of agriculture, embodying the genetic potential that determines crop productivity, resilience, and quality. At ICAR-NISST, we strongly uphold the belief that “better seeds lead to better yields, improved nutrition, and enhanced livelihoods.” Under the guidance of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), our institute plays a vital role in strengthening India’s seed sector through cutting-edge research, innovation, capacity building, and technology dissemination.

We are engaged in a broad mandate covering:

  • Strategic Research: Advancing the frontiers of seed biology, physiology, molecular diagnostics, and genomics to develop next-generation seed technologies.
  • Seed Quality & Health: Developing protocols and tools for quality assurance, seed health testing, genetic purity, and certification to uphold trust in the seed supply chain.
  • Technology Development: Innovating in the fields of seed production, enhancement, processing, and storage for improving seed vigor, shelf life, and field performance.
  • National Coordination: Hosting the All India Coordinated Research Project on Seed (Crops) (AICRP on Seed (Crops) to synergize efforts across diverse agro-climatic regions.
  • Capacity Building: Serving as a center of excellence for training scientists, extension workers, students, and stakeholders from public and private sectors.

Our state-of-the-art laboratories, highly skilled faculty, and collaborative ecosystem empower us to tackle critical challenges such as climate change, resource constraints, and nutritional insecurity. We are harnessing the potential of digital agriculture, AI/ML-based diagnostics, and biotechnology to develop climate-resilient and nutritionally enriched seed systems. At ICAR-NISST, we take pride not only in scientific excellence but also in creating tangible, real-world impact. Our technologies and training initiatives are enabling farmers across the country to boost productivity, improve quality, and enhance their incomes. Strengthening public–private partnerships (PPP) remains central to our approach, ensuring that innovations move swiftly from the laboratory to the field.

I express my sincere gratitude to ICAR, our dedicated team of scientists and staff, and our research and industry partners for their unwavering support. I warmly welcome farmers, researchers, students, and entrepreneurs to join hands with us in shaping a secure, sustainable, and prosperous agricultural future. Together, let us sow the seeds of innovation today to ensure a food-secure India for tomorrow.

With warm regards,

Dr. A. Anandan
