Research Accomplishments (5 best):

  • 1. Registration of the genetic stock SM/11-120: Hybrid SM/11-120 is a promising clone with strong resistance to both species of potato cyst nematodes (G. rostochiensis and G. pallida), late blight, and shows low whitefly preference. It yields well, matures from medium to late, and produces round, yellow-pink tubers with light yellow flesh and medium-deep eyes. These traits make it a valuable parental line for developing resistant potato hybrids.
  • 2. Cloning and sequencing of PALCV resistance genes: Resistance genes against yellow leaf curl virus in tomato were retrieved from the Solanaceae database, and their homologues were identified in the potato genome. Primers were designed, and screening in potato germplasm is underway. Differential expression of Pelota (Ty-5) and Permease I (Ty-2) was observed in Kufri Bahar and Kufri Pukhraj, and both genes were cloned and sequence-verified. Their role in PALCV resistance is being studied. Additionally, five genes—including Bhlh, two antiviral transcription factors, and two Ty-1-like genes—were also cloned and sequenced based on expression differences.
